There is a revolution going on in the world of engineering. If you decide to join it, it’s a revolution that can help you be better…a lot better.
It can help you to be more productive, more satisfied, more engaged, land a top job and build a more successful career.
It can help you become what I like to call a “remarkable engineer”. Others have called this new type of engineer an “expert engineer”, and a “whole new engineer”.
So are you wondering what this revolution is?
I’ll tell you in just a moment, but first let’s talk about what it isn’t.
- It isn’t about a fancy new way of learning that will insure you get a 4.0 GPA in high school and college.
- Although technology does keep getting better, it isn’t about a bunch of whiz bang new tech tools for you to use.
- And finally, it isn’t about being able to magically solve the world’s problems with easily engineered solutions.
It’s a whole lot simpler than any of these
It’s something that those of us working in the wide range of engineering disciplines have known for years.
In fact, I first learned about it during an internship session in 1979 when a seasoned manager said to me,
Don, you need to understand that engineering is roughly 80% communications and 20% technical.
My manager nailed it
Although he said it years ago, my manager at John Deere foretold exactly what the revolution in engineering is about today…
Today’s engineering revolution is that industry and academia are actively acknowledging and embracing the fact that outstanding engineering is achieved by combining solid technical know-how with excellent soft skills.
You might also hear them called people skills, social skills, communication skills or even socio-technical skills. But no matter what language is used, the bottom line is that relying solely on technical knowledge won’t bring you engineering career success.
So what’s this all mean for you?
It means that if your goal is to excel in engineering (and in life too), today is the day to begin planning for and building excellent soft skills.
All of these skills, and others, are what the SUCCESS MANIFESTO FOR 21st CENTURY ENGINEERING STUDENTS is about. Call it an engineering success roadmap if you like. For some, though, it might also be a wake up call.
Are You Ready?
So are you ready for the revolution? Are you ready to join me on this journey?
I’m honored to share with you in the MANIFESTO some of what I’ve learned during the past 35 years as an engineering college intern, an engineer, a technical recruiter, a trainer, and a project manager, but I’m also excited to learn from you.
Let’s go get started right now. Let’s go get ready to be remarkable, to do remarkable work, and to live a remarkable life!
I invite you to join me by getting your own free copy of the SUCCESS MANIFESTO right now!
